The Fox in Lyng

History

During the medieval times, Lyng had two churches, with only one still standing today. The Church of St. Edmund served as the church of the Benedictine Monastery. However, after it became unused in the 12th century, it fell to ruin. However, the Church of Saint Margaret still stands today and is still in use with regular services.

Lyng at one point had three fully licensed pubs. The King’s Head was licensed in 1794 and held that license until 1985. A few years later the site was converted into residential housing, however, it still retains its style and character.  The Bell which opened in 1841 was a popular local pub until 1960 when it closed permanently. The Fox and Hounds, now The Fox, is the only pub that remains in Lyng. Although the building is thought to date from 1710, the pub didn’t gain its license until 1794, where it was first opened as a Dereham Brewery House. The building went through several owners after that and is now currently owned by Vikki King and Gavin Hunt.
